Many moments in my life taught me something or the other. I’ve many people in my life who’ve helped me be a better person and guided me towards the right path. Out of all these different experiences I've had in my life, two stands out much to me.
Most college applications have a prompt which addresses a personal experience. An example can be found in the Common Application essay prompts, which have not changed in recent years; in the first prompt for the Common App essays for 2011-2012, you will find what I call the “Significant Experience” essay, which is broken down into some subtypes by the C.A. folks, including a risk you have.

I think that personal experience is very important, but certainly it shouldn't be a kind of shut-box and mirror-looking, narcissistic experience. I believe it should be relevant, and relevant to the larger things, the bigger things, such as Hiroshima and Dachau and so on.

The topic can be a tear jerker, but this essay lacked the depth and richness that other essays with similar topics possess. The experience obviously impacted the student very much. But what students do not realize is that they do not have to share such personal issues within the confines of a college essay.
